Overview
Within a new-energy power plant, the centralized energy storage system—the converter and step-up cabin—is composed of five main components: the PCS unit, the transformer room, the low-voltage switchgear, the ring network switchgear, and the equipment enclosure.
The Power Conversion System (PCS) controls the charging and discharging processes of batteries, connecting the battery system to the power grid (and/or to loads). It is a device that enables bidirectional energy conversion: it can convert the DC electricity from batteries into AC electricity for transmission to the power grid or for use by AC loads; alternatively, it can rectify AC electricity from the power grid into DC electricity to charge the batteries.
The PCS consists of a bidirectional DC/AC converter, a control unit, and other components. The PCS controller receives control instructions from the backend system via communication and, based on the sign and magnitude of the power command, controls the converter to charge or discharge the battery, thereby regulating the active and reactive power supplied to the grid. Via the CAN interface, the PCS controller communicates with the BMS to obtain battery pack status information, enabling protective charging and discharging of the battery and ensuring its safe operation.
