In China’s 6-35 kV AC power grids, the neutral point of the power system can be grounded in various ways, including ungrounded, grounded via an arc-suppression coil, high-resistance grounded, or low-resistance grounded. In power systems—especially urban distribution networks where cables serve as the primary transmission lines—the capacitive ground current is relatively large, which may create specific “critical” conditions conducive to the occurrence of “intermittent” arc-overvoltages due to arcing-to-ground faults, thereby triggering arc-flash overvoltages. The application of neutral-point resistance grounding provides a discharge path for energy (charge) stored in the grid’s ground capacitance and injects resistive current into the fault location, giving the ground-fault current a combined resistive-capacitive nature. This reduces the phase angle difference between the current and voltage, lowers the re-striking rate after the fault current crosses zero, and disrupts the “critical” conditions that lead to arc-flash overvoltages. As a result, the overvoltage is limited to within 2.6 times the phase voltage. At the same time, this approach ensures that highly sensitive ground-fault protection devices can accurately detect and promptly isolate both primary and secondary faults in the feeder lines, thereby safeguarding the normal operation of the power system.

Components of the transformer neutral-point grounding resistor cabinet: cabinet body (box-type combined cabinet), grounding transformer (optional for systems without a neutral point), grounding resistor, current transformer, isolating switchgear assembly, and intelligent controller (intelligent monitoring unit).
