A box-type substation, also known as a prefabricated substation or packaged substation, is a compact, factory-preassembled indoor or outdoor electrical distribution device that integrates high-voltage switchgear, distribution transformers, and low-voltage switchgear according to a specific wiring configuration. It organically combines functions such as transformer step-down and low-voltage power distribution into a single unit, housed within a fully enclosed, steel-structure enclosure that is moisture-proof, rust-proof, dust-proof, rodent-resistant, fire-resistant, theft-proof, thermally insulated, and movable. This type of substation is particularly well-suited for urban grid construction and renovation, representing a new generation of substations that has emerged following the traditional brick-and-mortar substations. Box-type substations are applicable in mining operations, industrial enterprises, oil and gas fields, and wind power stations; they have replaced conventional brick-and-mortar switchgear rooms and substations, becoming a new type of complete, packaged substation and distribution system.
Box-type substations are suitable for residential communities, urban public substations, bustling downtown areas, construction power supply, and other applications. Users can select the appropriate box-type substation based on different operating conditions and load levels. Since their introduction, box-type substations have developed at an extremely rapid pace. In developed European countries, they now account for 70% of distribution transformers, while in the United States, this figure has reached 90%.
